Rock Star Mommy

DSC_0728-(ZF-6193-92140-1-006)DSC_0730-(ZF-6193-92140-1-007)Just because you have a baby doesn’t mean you can’t still be a bad ass. I would like to think that I’m a cool mom and not a regular mom, so a fun pair of ripped up black denim and a solid leather jacket is the perfect remedy for the post baby body blues– Say that 3 times fast!! I think attitude can be just as important as your actual clothes when you are trying to feel good in your skin… This can be crazy difficult after having a kid. I mean, when boyfriend jeans that used to be super loose barely squeak up your thighs it’s hard not to break down!! And all of the “give yourself time” “you just had a baby” “it took 9 months to make a baby” nonsense does nothing to make you feel better. You just wanna cry. Eat a cookie. Then cry some more. I’ve found the trick for post baby jeans is [drumroll please] stretch. Those puppies need to have a crap-load of lycra!!! Now I’m not the type to buy jeans with stretch, I like good ol’ denim so this was new for me, but I swear it’s the best thing ever!! I know some of your are thinking, I don’t want to waste money on transitional clothes, I hear ya, but you’re wrong. Having a pair or 2 of jeans that make you feel awesome is absolutely worth the cost. Also, with stretch denim you will probably be closer to your normal size than you would think… but I’ll warn you things can get a bit muffin toppy and this is where your slimming tanks and baggy tees come into play!!

[Note to those women who rock their maternity jeans much, much longer than you should…] Yes, some maternity denim will continue to fit after bambino especially for the fist few weeks, but once you are sans big baby tummy your pants will fall down, your hips will start to go back to their rightful place and you will probably have mom-jean butt… Buy yourself a pair. Do it.

My favorite denim with some give. I’m partial to skinny jeans, I think when worn correctly they work on all body types and are super duper flattering.

Improv Pasta

IMG_9608

Like anyone short on time and sleep, I find that eating, while epically important, is easy to forget to do and some nights it’s a scramble just to eat anything at all let alone make a dinner. Well The Captain and I have found at least one meal that we can make on the fly and be eating in less than 15 minutes, and it’s warm and filling and chock-o-block full of veggies. I would say that’s a major step above rice cakes or cereal for dinner.

IMG_9609[Step 1]

Boil salted water in a sauce pan. Preheat oven to 375.

[Step 2]

In another pan, sauté onions and garlic in oil [or water for a low fat option.] Add anything you have in the fridge or pantry. Seriously. Just about anything. Whoaaa dream big.

Bell peppers

Kalamata olives

Artichoke hearts

Sliced mushrooms

Spinach

Capers

The possibilities are endless. We used peppers, olives, and artichokes. Add your desired ingredients to the pan.

[Step 3] Open up a can/jar/container of leftover red sauce and top all the veggies. Lower the heat to low and let simmer whilst you make some garlic bread.

[Step 4] Add your favorite pasta to the water. I use Trader Joes brown rice fusilli, gluten free and DELISH.

[Step 5,6,7ish] If you are like us if you buy a loaf of bread you will eat the whole damn thing, so for a little portion control I use 1 ciabatta roll for both of us. I keep them in the freezer. Pop in the microwave to defrost. Cut into 4 pieces about an inch thick. Take some more minced garlic and pop in the microwave with a tablespoon of earth balance butter. Stir in about a tablespoon of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of dried parsley. Pour all over the ciabatta pieces [I stuff them all in an aluminum foil boat so I don’t have to do more dishes because I despise dishes] Toss in the oven for 5-6 minutes.

[Step 8ish] Enjoy your tasty meal in less than 20 minutes.

Home Sweet Rental

modani.001All Pieces Via Modani Except Orchid, Jute Rug, and Patterned Rug

After being introduced to Modani furniture, I thought it would be fun to create a look with their modern sofas. I aimed to decorate the space similarly to the way I would accessorize an outfit. Love that. I hate when I walk into some one’s home and can’t see a trace of them in their decor. I believe your house should be a direct reflection of your personal style!!!! So I loved this challenge because I decorate pretty much exactly like how I dress. Simple and basic core items like a chic neutral sofa = white tshirt and jeans, tons of colorful, fun pillows = arm party of bracelets, and an exciting rug or chair = a funky jacket or blazer… That’s my side by side comparison… because I thought you might’ve needed that… because I’m just so tired and totally unsure of what you might want… Moving on. This room has made me want to redecorate my entire house starting with the living room. I love this sofa and the reason is two fold. 1. It’s leatherette and can handle all kindsa baby drool/puke/poop/etc and 2. It folds into a bed. #winning I think my design is pretty self explanatory. Warm natural wood in modern shapes, a neutral sofa with crisp clean lines, and a ton of texture and color with the accessories. I love layers in a room, much like layers when dressing… They create dimension and a lived-in look. I LOVE creating a space that looks “collected” rather than purchased all in one day. Even though most of it was indeed purchased all in one day… okay, maybe a week… I’m impatient, what can I say!?

The Art of the Baggy Tee

DSC_0761-(ZF-6193-92140-1-024) DSC_0765-(ZF-6193-92140-1-023) DSC_0764-(ZF-6193-92140-1-022)DSC_0759 - Version 2-(ZF-6193-92140-1-019) DSC_0759-(ZF-6193-92140-1-020)Yes, my protege is epic!!DSC_0754 - Version 2-(ZF-6193-92140-1-021)Photos by Kelsey Erin | [jacket] Lululemon [Tee] Banana Republic [denim] Paige Premium [booties] Cole Haan

So I know when I see baggy tee you think sloppy and unkempt, but no no, there is a fine art to wearing a t-shirt and not looking like a slob. It’s an art that I have mastered and now that I am super uncomfortable with my mid-section I have learned to use this look to my advantage. Like always, I rock my favorite Felicity slimming nursing tank because I will take all the “slimming” action I can get and bonus, because these tees are so loose they can easily lift up for you to nurse! MAGIC!!! Okay, the secret to wearing baggy t-shirts is not rocket science… Are you ready!? The secret is always pairing it with a slim bottom. Skinny jeans, leggings, a fitted pair of boot cut like these, or slim yoga pants. Boom. That’s it. Microphone dropped. I also lean towards shirts that are on the longer side, nothing too boxy. When you are feeling frumpy “short” and “stubby” aren’t words that we want to evoke with our wardrobe. We want to take ever opportunity to elongate ourselves, especially when we aren’t feeling so hot about our tummies. Think long and loose, it should hit right bellow the widest part of your hips. Also, this length can help cover up another post-baby phenomenon, ‘dem hips yo!! I’ve always had a big booty, but LAWD have mercyyyy. If you are wearing leggings it is of the utmost importance that you cover 98% of your ass with your tee. We can see the underside of the cheeks, but anymore than that and you risk giving away the whole shebang and let’s keep something to the imagination. Oh, and for the love of God don’t wear nude, taupe, or any flesh tone leggings… ya look like ya ain’t wearin’ pants. Okay, so stayed tuned for more dressing your post baby body, next week talk about the dreaded muffin top and getting back into your skinny jeans… or not…

Wanna shop some tees, here are a few of my current favorites!!

Mocha Brownie Smoothie

IMG_9825So now that The Captain is back on the mainland, we are both trying to get our health and digestive tracks back in order… Me from growing a child, him from living like a college student. Definitely the same… Hmmm. Any who, in our attempt to “cleanse” we have given up wheat, processed sugar, processed foods, alcohol, soy[mostly], and dairy[obviously not a struggle for me]. It’s quite the list. Not nearly as crazy as some, but still I want to ravage a piece of bread right now. Yes, vegans LOVE bread. We did decide to keep caffeine in the mix as we both only have 1 cup of black coffee a day and we have a 4 month old. No sodas up in this crib. Well, I was craving a brownie something fierce with my morning coffee when this smoothie popped in my head… It was perfect!! Yummy, fudgy goodness!!!

1 giant serving or 3 double old fashioned servings

3 dates [soaked for 10 min in hot water]

1 1/4 cup almond milk

1/2 cup coffee

1 tablespoon flax seeds [ground if not using a high powered blender such as a Vitamix]

1 tablespoon chia seeds

2 tablespoons of a clean diary/whey free protein [I used the vanilla juice plus powder. SO GOOD.]

1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder depending on how chocolatey you like it [unsweetened, raw if possible]

1/2 cup frozen spinach

1 frozen banana

Throw it all in a blender and presto!!!! Deliciousness!

Even your layers, have layers…

Boho Mod Layers : ModCloth
So I was thrilled when ModCloth asked me to put together a layered look using their super cute clothes! I’d been on their site before, but it had been a hot minute. I WANT ERRYTHING. So much fabulousness and great prices too. I’m sold. Anywhozzle. I am, of course, drawn to anything that The Olsen’s would wear aka Hobo Chic, so this Bona Fide Boho Cardigan was where it all started. Obsessed. I like the idea of wearing a chic, modern blouse underneath a graphic tee and shut your face, weekends ARE for waffles. I think this is hip and playful, it would pair so well with some leathery leggings… I mean, you could do skinny jeans, but come on, stretchy pants for the win. I like the juxtaposition of this relaxed look with a super structured bag in a rad color. Throw on some booties and a few hip rings and you are officially too cool for school… are people still saying that!? Meh. If you really wanna bring the hobo chic on strong add a super fun beanie or a rad scarf in a bold color. I’m in love, I’m also wishing I didn’t live in Southern California. Please ignore my crazy talk. Definitely stop by the site, I’m also digging this sweater and this sweater and thissss sweater. You get it. You can check out their entire selection of fab cardigans here!!! You know you want to!!

Happy Monday Folks!!
