Blue Suede Shoes

I don’t really go out-out very often. The Captain and I are pretty much homebodies. We love a nice meal out , but we rarely need to get dressed up all fancy-like because in San Diego unless you are going to a club there is no reason to dress up. You should see the crap people wear out to a nice dinner here. It’s possible I’m over-dressed ALL THE TIME. I love this look. It gives me just enough sexy something while maintaining the chill vibe of SoCal. Plus, blue suede shoes!!!! Right? Am I right?! Yes, I know I’m right. Dinner time!!

Makeup Snob

UnderEye ConcealersHere’s the thing. I love makeup, like love-love it. I have an addiction and despite the fact that I rarely change up my makeup routine, I buy it like I’m on the verge of running out. So because of my crazy obsession I’ve tried a TON of products. TONS ‘O’ PRODUCTS! So I thought from time to time I would share my beauty findings with you! Today I wanted to talk about under eye brighteners/concealers. I’ve read for years about the YSL Touche Eclat brightener. I decided to try it a few weeks ago, so I tried it out. FACT: It’s awesome, like seriously the 3.5 blended beautifully with my skin, I looked awake and the product was crazy natural. I decided to hold off on purchasing the 40 dollar product to see how it sat on my skin after a few hours. FACT: It lasted for the remainder of the day and continued to look perfect! I’m a huge fan…Before shelling out that kinda dough, I decided to try the also much loved Clinique airbrush concealer. At half the price I was unsure how this would stack up to the ah-mazing YSL, but color-me-impressed!!!! It is pretty great!! The formula is just as light and spreads easily over my hella dark bags. I feel like the YSL has a more seamless finish, pretty full proof, while the Clinique product requires a little more blending with your base makeup, but at half the cost the winner is definitely the Clinique Airbrush! Make sure to pat the product in and blend well with your foundation/base and for 20 bucks you will get the same result as the magical YSL.

Sidenote. Drink lotsa water and you’ll notice a drastic reduction in dark circles. Also, stay away from processed foods and anything super high in sodium, eat some vitamin K and lay off the caffeine!!! Kimberly Snyder, my favorite nutritionist, has a ton to say on the matter!!! Check out her site!!

Delish 3 Bean Chili

Vegan 3 Bean ChiliFall is here!!!! Sort of… In Southern California it’s pretty much spring/summer all year long until magically it’s winter for 3 months then bam back to 75 and sunny. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but sometimes you just want to see the leaves change color and wear a pair of boots in October without your feet sweating all nasty up in there. For near perfect weather year round I suppose there has to be a trade off. Well, it’s October and that means Halloween which in turn means CHILI!!!! A Lanza family tradition!! I don’t know when this started, but when I think of Halloween I think of Sandy’s[my mom] chili. Now my version has slightly changed over the years, first to turkey, then to meatless grounds, and now to all beans all the time. Now in the past I’ve just used the meatless grounds and the meat eaters have been none the wiser, but this all bean version has so much flavor no one is going to miss the meat! This meal is warm, spicy, and the perfect compliment to a cool fall day!

Vegan Chili Spices3 Bean Chili – Serves an Army

1 onion, finely chopped

3 garlic cloves, minced

1/4 cup chili powder

2 tablespoons cumin

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for personal taste, I like more!!)

1 bay leaf

1 15 oz can each of red kidney beans, black beans, and pinto beans, all strained and rinsed

2 15 oz cans of fire roasted tomatoes with chilies

3 tablespoons + 1 cup of veggie stock

Add 3 tablespoons of veggie stock to a large ceramic pan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook until soft, adding more veggie stock if necessary. Mix in all of the spices and cook for 1 minute, then add tomatoes, beans, veggie stock. Mix well. Bring to a slow boil then reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook for at least 30 minutes, but depending on your timeline for an hour or two. Stirring every so often. You can also do this in a slow cooker, I would sauté the onions in garlic before adding all the ingredients into the crockpot and cook on high for 3-4 hours or slow for 5-6.

Enjoy with diced white onions, avocado, corn chips, green onions, etc etc. The list is endless. I’m a onions and avocado girl myself.

Delectable Corn Muffins – Makes 12 muffins

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup diced green chilies

1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce

1 1/4 cup unsweetened plain almond milk

1 1/2 cup of cornmeal

1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Mix all dry and all wet ingredients. Then gently fold the wet into the dry, be sure not to over stir. Pour  batter into a non-stick muffin tin and bake for 30-35 mins. Boom. Done.

This recipe is adapted from Alicia Silverstone’s book The Kind Diet. I’ve been doing a no-oil/low oil diet for about a year now, so I look for any opportunity to cut oil.  This cornbread is super easy and just by switching out the oil for unsweetened applesauce you kick the fat in it’s big ass. I also add some green chilies for some FIRE… ’cause I love FIRE… I don’t know what I’m talking about.  I ate 5 of these because they are guilt free… I was feeling sad, missing The Captain, watching a Twilight marathon… Anywho, they are amazing!!! Let me know if you try making either recipe! Happy Fall!

This was one of my favorite photo shoots to date!! I felt like a desert fairy! I must really like fairies, I always seem to feel like one! This is such a good photo shoot look, but also translates really well to everyday. It’s really boho bracelets, a maxi dress, and some sandals. Add flower crown and you’re good to go, insta-hippie!! I have been a little obsessed with arm parties. I like my wrists to be decked out something fierce. I have collected my bracelets over time which suits my style because I can’t stand anything too matchy-matchy. I love Lenny & Eva bracelets!! My sister got me hooked! You can buy them from her store and various boutiques. I love that they can be personalized and hold some sort of meaning to you! I am always on the look out for a perfect stacking bracelet and I’m in love with this one here, and this one, oh and this one… and this one too… Yes, I have a serious problem. This dress is an old Anthro purchase, probably one of my most perfect purchases to date! It’s long gone from the stores, but this one is pretty major! I love this look and definitely think that it can be replicated super easily by just about anyone for a casual day look!!

Bridal Shower Mayhem

ShowerDecorWeddings, ahhhh, Weddings. I dig a good wedding. Heck, I wrote wedding blogs for 2+ years. I love weddings. I’ve been in 5 weddings as a mostly-adult, but this marks the first time as a real bridal shower host. First, I was Maid of Honor [as promised in every yearbook since kindergarten] for my bestest bud when we were barely 21. I was still in college and broke as a joke, so I sorta threw a shower with my mom and the church ladies. Then was my little sis, again, super poor… I was planning my wedding too, so I don’t remember how that shower went down. I know, such a jerk. After that was my dearest friend who had a surprise wedding. Yes, it was exactly as awesome as it sounds! So yeah, no shower. This year I was in two weddings. One AH-mazing affair in beautiful Negril, Jamaica and due to all of the travel, while I ended up being able to surprise my wonderful friend for the shower, I didn’t get to help plan. So this July I had the opportunity to host my first real-life-grownup shower. My lovely friend Shirk Shirley got married to her Guido Prince Frankie. We had a mostly vegan shower– what??? If I’m buying the food you best believe it’s going to be healthy of sorts. Em, the ginger, hatched most of the decor ideas and the curly haired babe, Marilyn, did the drinks and baking. I, of course, made all of the food! Here are some shots of the day.Bridal Shower Entry TableShowerDecor2Veggie Bridal Shower Buffethummus cupsCaprese SkewersBridal Shower Vegan CupcakesTheGirlsLotsaWineWine is the best! It was an absolutely lovely day! I made my famous pesto pasta!! I made enough to feed an army, we had leftovers for days. Here’s the recipe.

Serves 4 hungry people or 6 sorta hungry people

1 pound of pasta, I like Trader Joes brown rice fusilli

1 bunch of asparagus, chopped same length as pasta

1 pound of green beans, trimmed and chopped same length as pasta

Cook the pasta per package instructions. I like my veggies to have bite to them, so I throw them in with the pasta for the last 5 minutes of cooking. Now depending on how you like your veggies adjust this time. Strain and toss with pesto

.

For Pesto

Basil, about a 1/2 cup

Spinach, about 1/2 a cup

2 cloves of garlic, more if you are a big garlic fan

1/4 cup nutritional yeast [easily found a most markets and super high in B vitamins]

3 tablespoons of pine nuts

Veggie stock, salt, and pepper

Mix all ingredients in a high powered blender or food processor. Add all ingredients then add a tablespoon of veggie stock and blend. Add veggie stock tablespoon by tablespoon until creamy. It depends on your appliance and personal taste. In my Vitamix, I find 2-3 is plenty. Add salt and pepper to taste. Pour over pasta and serve with cherry tomatoes on top! YAY SHOWERS!!!!!

Happy Birthday Muffins

BooBerrySo the Lanza – Osias family is getting old. The Captain turned the big 3-0 in August and my middle-age fate is closing in fast. On the morning of his birthday our bare vegan pantry left much to be desired. I wanted Muffins. Blueberry Muffins. Birthday effing Muffins. So I looked at what I had and tried to find a recipe that would work for me. This is adapted from this recipe to get rid of the icky refined sugar. I love these muffins because they aren’t overly sweet, but have the perfect cakey texture. YUM.

Preheat oven to 325.

2 1/4 cup ww pastry flower

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup almond milk

zest 1 lemon

2 tablespoons coconut oil

2 teaspoons vanilla

6 tablespoons unsweetened applesauce

3/8 cup maple syrup

10 drops of liquid stevia

11oz of organic blueberries

Mix the wet ingredients in a large bowl and the dry in a small bowl, then slowly incorporate the dry ingredients. Once well combined, gently fold in the blueberries! Bake for 25 minutes then enjoy the delicious wonderfulness with a pat or two of Earth Balance butter.

All is right with the world.
