Everyone loves Fall. Everyone. If you are sitting there saying, “eh, I’m not a fan,” then you are probably impossibly unhappy with life and I feel bad for you. I love Fall and it’s finally finding it’s way to Southern California. Color me excited. I have purchased a few staples that I wanted to share with you! I also added a few extras that I’m currently lusting after! So leather, it’s hot and I’m obsessed. I purchased the above pair of faux leather leggings, nubuck booties, and the love of my life motorcycle jacket. Loooove leather. I would suggest all 3 pieces wholeheartedly, they are the perfect base for any Fall look. The jacket is an investment piece to be sure, but I’m so happy with the fit. The other pieces are fun accents that all work in harmony with one another!! Yay! Harmony!! And come on, that Geek Chic necklace!?!? Shut up! You know you want one! I am also jonesing hard for ox-blood, the color of the season. So sultry and fun!!! Okay, what pieces are you lusting after this Fall?

A flower crown is a must for any hippie in training! Just ask Pinterest!! Despite my lack of crafting skills I was able to, with the help from a friend, create an inexpensive and super cool flower crown quicker than you can say hippie-dippy-trippy-coachella-petchuli stink. Swearsies
[We started by wrapping 2 pieces of raffia wire together to our desired circumference. No idea if that’s what it’s actually called, but it looks like flower wire wrapped in raffia. You can find it in the silk flower section]
[We choose 2 different kinds of fake flowers, a main white one and then a smaller beige flower. We took off all of the leaves and some of the white flowers and added smaller beige petals to give it a little somethin’ special.]
The finished product!!! For under 10 bucks, I think it’s the perfect accessory for a photo shoot, a wedding, or whatever hipster music festival you’re heading to next!!! Enjoy!!!
Nowadays we want to know every aspect of celeb’s lives until they tell us and then we call them snobs… or at least that’s what seemed to happened with Gwyneth Paltrow. I have no idea why people give her such a hard time. Sure, she suggests clothes that cost more than 2 months rent in her “Get” posts and yes, her beloved manuka honey costs like 40 dollars a jar, but at the heart of her brand is finding balance within your own life. My takeaway has always been creating a distinct and wearable style for yourself, eating real food that’s healthy AND delicious, finding local and interesting businesses to support, and to just enjoy the good things in life. At least that’s my opinion. And hell, if I made millions of dollars I’d be buying Helmut Lang and Stella McCartney everything then I’d smother it in gluten free flour and expensive-ass honey! Perhaps that’s untrue… Alas, I love GP and think that her GOOP brand is a super cool site for the hip chick who loves quality and values information. GOOP is where I found out about Dr. Junger, developer of the Clean diet, a detox cleanse of which I’m a big fan! Her newest cookbook It’s All Good is a collection of diary, gluten, sugar free recipes that she uses while on the detox. This diet is supposed to make me look and feel good… Challenge accepted! So I decided to eat from her book for 2 whole weeks to see if she could make good on these claims.
During the 2 weeks I was cooking a lot, but I will say that the majority of the recipes were fairly quick and easy to make. Her salads were to die for! Seriously some of the best I’ve ever made at home. The Mexican chopped salad was so flavorful and satisfying. It’s one of my lunch staples now! The white bean and swiss chard soup is now a regular on my weekly menu, I’ve made it 4 times in the last month! I’m also a huge fan of her French style white beans which I paired with her mushroom and asparagus sauté. HOLY bananas!! Yum. Yum. Yum. Other dishes like the pureed white beans, while really tasty, definitely reminded me of baby food… super yummy baby food. The quinoa was delish albeit very simple, but I suppose that is the whole idea. There are meat dishes in the book which for obvious reasons I didn’t try, but they all seemed clean and delish. I don’t know about how I looked, but I felt great! As it turns out without gluten I immediately felt lighter, which sucks because my Lord, do I love gluten. I didn’t see a huge difference in my weight or skin, but I definitely felt slim and amazingly I was never hungry. I highly recommed this book to anyone looking to clean up their diet and try some fun new recipes, it would also make a great companion to the clean diet detox! In summary: Gwynie is the bomb, buy the book!!
The nights are getting cool here in SoCal and Hallelujah because I get to bust out my leather jackets!!! As a vegan I know plenty of people like to make snarky remarks, but the fact of the matter is I love leather. Until faux is as soft and luxurious as the real thing, I’m gonna stick with the real deal. Enough of that. How about that necklace!?!? So cute, right? So fun little story about that… The Captain has a rap name. Well all of my friends, we all, have rap names… Sweet T, Lil’ Pil, G-Dawg, K-Money, I’m LoJack and The Captain is Killa B. Yes, I know, we are AWESOME! Well whilst on his 8 month “work trip” off into the unknown it wasn’t uncommon to not get a call from him for 2-3 months and sometimes even email was unavailable for weeks at a time. Basically it sucked. Packages averaged about 4 weeks for delivery, so good luck getting something quick. Well imagine my surprise when I received a package on my birthday. My actual birthday-day! I couldn’t believe it, there were lots of tears. He found this awesome bee necklace from a small boutique in Thailand AND it’s perfect. I wear it to keep Killa B close to me! Do you have any jewelry that holds sentimental value? Tell me about it!

I was introduced to the brilliant Brittany Fuson‘s work a few years ago and am absolutely in LOVE with what she does!! Her illustrations are the epitome of chic and her killer knowledge of fashion definitely gives her that extra somethin-somethin. She’s immensely talented and does everything from celebrity drawings to stationary to custom wedding sketches. I’m happy to introduce her as our second inspiring chick in our Women Who Rock series!!!! I encourage you to check out her amazing site, awesome products, and wonderful blog!!!
Be honest, were you always a kick-ass artist or did it take some practice? Thank you for the compliment! I have been drawing for as long as I can remember, but my illustrations have gotten more refined and stylized over the years. I look back on illustrations from high school and cringe. They’re so different from the way they look now. It’s like riding a bike, though. I have to do a few to get warmed up each day. I can always tell when I haven’t picked up a pencil in a few days… the first few can be rough.
What makes a killer illustration? My idea of a great illustration and the audience’s idea are totally different. I tend to prefer the black and white messy sketches. However, the best sellers and most popular ones are the ones with loads of color. People also love to see illustrations of celebrities and people they can easily recognize (ex: Kate Middleton).
Who is your current fashion goddess of choice? Fashion Goddess of choice…. so many to pick from. I love turning to Olivia Palermo for outfit inspiration. There’s also tons of great bloggers out there with amazing style (Rachel of Pink Peonies, Emily of the Ivory Lane, Blair of Atlantic-Pacific, etc.). Pinterest has been a God-send… being able to combine all my inspirational photos in one place!
If you could only draw one designer for the rest of time, who would you choose? My answer would be different if you asked which designer I turn to for everyday inspiration. If I could only look to one designer for my everyday life, what to wear, how to incorporate the latest trends, etc. it would be a combo of Stella McCartney, Rag & Bone, The Row and Derek Lam. As far as drawing designer duds, I could draw Oscar de la Renta everyday for the rest of my life and be happy. The colors he uses and the shapes…. classic but so beautiful.
What’s your favorite trend for Fall?? On my blog right now, I’m dedicating the entire month to my “September Issue” where I’m covering all the big trends for fall. One that I’m excited to try is the midi skirt. I work from home, so I rarely get super dressed up for work. But I love the idea of the longer length for fall.
This recipe makes it to every incarnation of the blog and it keeps getting better and better. It’s my go-to potluck dish! It’s so tasty. Lemony. Garlicy. Salty. Mmmmmm Yummmmy. I love the crisp cucumbers and the sweet cherry tomatoes mixed in with the savory goodness. I could literally eat this every single day… there were weeks during The Captain’s deployment when I did it every single day… Not proud of it, but it’s the truth. I made it for lunch yesterday and ate the whole pot… All of it… All four servings!!! Yeah, it’s really that good.
1 cup quinoa
2.5 cups veggie stock
2 large cloves, minced
1 English cucumber, chopped
1 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped
1/4 cup kalamata olives, chopped
2 tablespoons capers [optional]
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped
1/4 cup lemon juice with a few splashes of olive juice [like solid splashes, don’t wimp out]
Cook quinoa per package instructions, I throw the quinoa and stock into rice cooker and press start. Chop veggies. Squeeze lemons, add olive juice. When the quinoa is done throw the garlic in first and stir up so the quinoa can warm it up and get it all fragrant and delish-like. Add the veggies and the juice. Mix well and serve immediately. It also tastes amazing at room temperature too. So good. Sooo, sooooo good.
